Dice roller

Type the dice you want, like 2d6+3 or 4d6 drop lowest, or tap a die to roll it. You see every die, which ones were dropped or rerolled, and the total.

Try 2d6+3, d20, 4d6 drop lowest, 2d20kh1 (roll two, keep the higher), 3d6r1 (reroll 1s once) or d6! (a 6 rolls again and adds on).

How to use the dice roller

Type a roll in the box and press Roll. The letter d stands for dice and the number after it is how many sides, so 2d6 is two six-sided dice and d20 is one twenty-sided die. Add or take away a number at the end: 2d6+3, 3d8-1. For a quick roll, set how many dice and any number to add, then tap d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 or d100.

Your last 20 rolls are listed under the result. The list stays on this device and nobody else sees it.

Keeping, dropping, rerolling and exploding

  • Drop or keep. 4d6 drop lowest (or 4d6kh3, keep highest 3) rolls four dice and adds the best three. 2d20kh1 rolls two and keeps the higher, which many games call advantage; 2d20kl1 keeps the lower.
  • Reroll. 3d6r1, or 3d6 reroll 1s, rolls any 1 again, once. The second roll stands, even if it is another 1.
  • Exploding dice. d6! means a 6 is rolled again and added on, and again if that is a 6 too.
  • Percentile. d100 or d% gives 1 to 100. d3 works too.

How to read the result

The big number is the total. Each die is shown on its own. A dropped die has a dashed edge and a line through it, a rerolled one says what it was before ("was 1"), and an exploded one shows each roll that went into it, like 6+6+2. Under that is the lowest and highest the roll can make and its average, so you can tell a good roll from a poor one.

Are the rolls fair?

Yes. Each die uses your browser's secure random numbers, the same kind used to make passwords, not a pattern. A common shortcut makes low numbers a tiny bit more likely; we avoid it by throwing away the few random numbers that would tip the balance and drawing again, so every face has exactly the same chance. Nothing is sent to us.

Want the odds instead?

The dice probability calculator works out the exact chance of any total or any number of successes, and the game clock keeps long games moving. If the dice are for a new campaign, the fantasy name generator helps with characters and places, and our guide to painting miniatures covers the figures themselves.

Questions and answers

What does 2d6 mean?

Roll two six-sided dice and add them up. The first number is how many dice, and the number after the d is how many sides. 2d6 gives 2 to 12, and 7 is the most likely total.

What does 4d6 drop lowest mean?

Roll four six-sided dice, set aside the lowest one and add up the other three. It gives 3 to 18 like 3d6, but high totals come up more often: the average is about 12.24, against 10.5 for 3d6.

How do I roll with advantage or disadvantage?

Type 2d20kh1 (or d20 with advantage) to roll two twenty-sided dice and keep the higher. Type 2d20kl1 (or disadvantage) to keep the lower. Both dice show, and the one that does not count is crossed through.

Is an online dice roller as random as real dice?

This one gives every face exactly the same chance. Each roll comes from your browser's secure random numbers, with the slight lean towards low numbers that a common shortcut causes taken out.

Can I put the dice roller on our club's website?

Yes. Copy the embed code under the roller and paste it into your page. It is free; please keep the short credit line with it.
