Personalised gifts for him, printed from his own artwork

Personalised gifts for him are hard for one specific reason: the man who is difficult to buy for is usually the man who buys what he wants the moment he wants it. Anything you can choose, he could have chosen. What he can't buy is something made out of his own work.

There is a reason the husband, boyfriend or father who "has everything" is the one everybody struggles with, and it is not that he is fussy. It's that his wants have a short queue: he sees it, he orders it, it arrives on Thursday. Any object you pick off a shelf, he could have picked off the same shelf.

The exception is anything that starts from something of his. A photograph he took, a model he painted, a drawing he did years ago and never framed, the character art from a game he has been running since before you met him. Those can't be bought by anyone, including him, because the raw material lives on his own phone.

Find the thing he made and never did anything with

Most people who make things have a folder of finished work they never looked at again. Ask what he is proudest of finishing, not what he would like, and you'll usually get a straight answer: people are much better at naming their own good work than at naming presents.

If he paints figures, the candidate is nearly always one specific model, not the biggest or newest. If he draws, it will be a piece he finished at two in the morning. If he plays, it might be a character sheet with a portrait clipped to it.

Match the object to how he lives, not to how it looks

This is where most present-buying goes wrong, because the nicest object isn't always the one that gets used.

Personalised gifts for him, ranked by how often he will see it

How often it gets used is the test to apply, and it sorts this list better than price does. A mug is handled every single morning. A bottle goes wherever he goes. A print on the wall he faces is seen daily for a fortnight and then becomes part of the room, which isn't a criticism, it is what art on walls is for, but it is a different promise from the mug.

So the question worth asking is not which object is nicest. It is whether you want the thing he notices every day or the thing that quietly changes a room he sits in. Both are good answers; they're not the same present, and the price order does not tell you which is which.

Ask for the file, and say why

The part people skip. You need the original image, not a screenshot of it, and if he made it you need his agreement to have it printed, which is easy to get without spoiling the surprise, because "send me that photo of the one you finished last month" is a normal thing to say and reveals nothing.

Keep the format and the occasion secret if you like. Do not keep the permission secret; taking someone's work off their feed and having it printed is a different thing from being given it.

Write down why you picked that one

A present made from his own work carries an implied compliment, and it lands much harder if you say it out loud. One line about what you noticed (the colours, how long it took, how pleased he was the day he finished it) is worth more than the object it is attached to.

If you want to see how the surfaces differ before choosing, the format guide covers them, and the framed prints list the two sizes we frame.

Personalised gifts for dad, and for Father’s Day

A dad is the hardest version of the man who has everything, because he’s had longest to buy it. The same route works: a photograph he took on a trip he still talks about, a model he painted at the kitchen table, a drawing he did for you years ago. Put it on a mug for his morning, or in a frame at A3 or A2 for the wall he faces. For Father’s Day, count back from the day the same way as at Christmas below, and leave time to get the file from him without saying why.

Personalised gifts for him at Christmas

These gifts are made to order, so allow 4-9 working days and order by Thursday 10 December for Christmas (Tuesday 15 December with Priority delivery). Leave extra room if he has to send you the original file first, and keep your reason to yourself while you ask. A canvas suits a hallway or a study, while a mug gets used daily. Questions and answers

What do you get the man who buys everything himself?

Something he can't buy: an object made from his own photograph, painting or painted model. The raw material is already on his phone.

How do I get the image without ruining the surprise?

Ask for the file, not the reason. "Send me the photo of the one you finished" is an ordinary request. Keep the format and the occasion to yourself, but get his agreement to print his work.

What if he has never made anything?

Then a photograph he took will do the same job. The principle is that it started with him, not that he painted it.

What are some good geeky presents in the UK?

One made from his own hobby: a painted figure, his character art or a drawing, printed as a poster, a framed print, a canvas, a metal or wood print, an 11 oz mug or a 500 ml bottle. We deliver to UK addresses only, and delivery is free.

What is a thoughtful gift for a man?

One that shows you noticed what he made. Ask which photo, painting or painted model he’s proudest of, print that one, and add a line about why you picked it. The object can be small: an 11 oz mug he uses every morning makes the point as well as a framed print does.
