Gifts for teenage lads: print something he made

Gifts for teenage lads are easiest to get right when they start from his own drawing, painted model or game picture. Then pick a poster, print, mug or bottle for his room.

Most gift lists for teenage lads are headsets, controllers and gadgets. That’s fine if you know exactly which console he owns. If you don’t, there’s another route: start from something he made or kept, and turn it into an object for his room. This guide covers what we can make, which format suits a teenager’s space, and how to get the order in on time.

Start with something he made

If he draws, games or paints models, ask which piece he is most pleased with. It might be a sketchbook page, a character design, a map he drew for a game, or a photo of a miniature he painted at the kitchen table. Any of those can be printed as it is, and none of them can be bought from a shop shelf.

You don’t need to guess his taste from a list of trends. Ask what he finished recently and was happy with, or ask a parent, sibling or friend who has seen his work. The answer is usually more specific than anything you would have picked yourself.

What we make, and where it will sit

Work out where the gift will live before you pick the material. A bedroom has a wall, a desk and a bag, and each suits a different product.

  • The wall: a poster with no frame, from A4 for a pinboard to as big as 70 x 100 cm for a whole wall; a framed print (A3 or A2) with a black or a natural wood frame; or a canvas, four sizes between 30 x 40 and 60 x 80 cm.
  • The desk: an 11 oz mug in white ceramic, or a 500 ml stainless steel water bottle that goes to school or training with him.
  • His own devices: a digital download, a file sent as a link by email, for a teenager who would rather use the picture as he likes.

Metal and wood prints exist too, and the format guide compares every surface side by side. Every size and its price is on the shop page, and the upload step withdraws any size his file is too small to print sharply, so you can’t order something that will look soft.

Gifts for teenage lads who game

A gamer’s own pictures are usually digital: character art he drew or commissioned, a screenshot he kept, an avatar he designed himself. Screenshots are captured at screen resolution, so they suit the smaller sizes better than a large poster. If he has the original file from whoever drew a character, ask for that instead of a copy saved from a chat.

For a bedroom that is already full of screens, a poster or metal print gives the wall something that is his, not a shop’s. Our print sizes guide goes further into files and sizes, and gaming room decor helps with choosing the wall. We don’t sell consoles, headsets or controllers, so this route is for the person who already has them.

A gift for a teenage lad who draws or paints models

A drawing photographs or scans well and prints as it is. A painted miniature needs a decent photograph: plain background, soft light, the whole base in shot. The miniature photography guide explains how. A single figure filling the frame makes a strong framed print for a shelf or a desk.

If the drawing or model belongs to someone else, such as a friend’s commission, that person needs to agree to the print. When you upload, you confirm that you own it or are allowed to use and reproduce it.

Choosing for a teenager’s room

Measure the wall or shelf before choosing a size. A3 framed suits a desk or a narrow stretch of wall, and A2 needs proper space. Marking the size on the wall with masking tape shows how it will look better than a mockup does, and how to hang a picture covers the fixing.

One print of a picture he made is a different kind of gift, because it's the only one there is. If he shares a room or moves about often, a mug or a bottle travels better than a large frame.

Print it as it is, or place it in a scene

Direct printing sends his artwork to print with no AI step, so what he made is exactly what arrives. That’s the right choice for a drawing or anything he would not want altered.

For a photo of a painted figure, the scene route can place it in a new setting. Once your email is verified, the limit is three successful previews a day. They carry a watermark and stay saved for 30 days. What gets printed is the exact artwork you choose, minus the watermark. AI can change faces, the edges between colours, and small markings. Check every result against his original photo. The result-checking guide has a short comparison list. If none of the scenes is right, print the original photo instead.

How to get a file that prints well

  • Use the original file: the camera photo, the scan, or the export from the drawing app. A picture forwarded through a messaging app is usually smaller.
  • Keep the important detail away from the edges, because each product crops slightly differently. The crop preview shows exactly what will print before you order.
  • For a mug or bottle, choose one clear focal point. The printable area is smaller than the object.
  • Check the paper sizes reference if you want to know how many pixels a size needs.

Ask permission without spoiling the surprise

You can keep the gift secret and still ask for the image: “Send me that drawing you finished last month” sounds like nothing special. What it is going on, and why, can stay your secret. Don’t skip the permission step, because a picture taken from his account isn’t yours to print.

When to order for Christmas

Everything we sell is made to order and takes 4-9 working days, so leave a margin before Christmas, and a wider one if you still have to ask him for the original file.

Delivery to a UK address is standard and already in the price. Priority is there if you want it sooner, at an added cost. If something arrives damaged or with a print fault, the delivery and returns page sets out the timings and next steps. Personalised items are made to your specification, so check the artwork and crop before you pay.

Other gift ideas from the same idea

If the gift is for someone older, personalised gifts for him takes the same approach. For a work or school draw with a spending limit, Secret Santa ideas lists options cheapest first. A friend who paints may prefer Christmas gifts for artists.

Questions and answers

What should I buy a teenage gamer?

If you know his console, a shop accessory is the safe choice. If you don’t, ask for a picture he made or kept, such as character art or a screenshot, and we print it as a poster, framed print, canvas, mug or bottle. We do not sell consoles, headsets or controllers.

What can I make a gift from if he doesn’t draw or paint?

Any image he owns or has given you permission to use: a screenshot he kept, a photo he took, or a picture of a model he built. The upload check shows which sizes the file can carry before you pay.

Will the picture be changed by AI?

Only if you choose the scene route. Direct printing sends his image to print unchanged. On the scene route you approve one of up to three successful watermarked previews a day, and the print uses that exact artwork without the watermark.

How long does it take, and can I order for Christmas?

Everything is made to order, so allow 4-9 working days and order by Thursday 10 December for Christmas (Tuesday 15 December with Priority delivery). The price includes standard UK delivery, and Priority delivery is optional at extra cost.

Can I keep it a surprise?

The format and the reason can stay a secret, but ask for the image and his agreement to print it. At upload you confirm that you own the picture or may reproduce it.
