Personalised Valentine's gifts from a photo, a drawing or a place that matters

The best personalised Valentine's gifts start with a picture you already have: a photo of the two of you, a drawing one of you made, or a place that matters, printed as a framed print, canvas or mug. This guide covers which picture suits which person, which object suits the picture, and how to leave enough time.

A name inside a heart isn't the only option. The version we make starts with a picture you already have and prints it on something the person will use or hang, from a mug to a framed canvas. After uploading your image, choose "Print as it is" and the file is printed untouched, with no AI involved. What's left to decide is whose picture it is, which object it goes on, and whether the file can carry the size you want.

Personalised Valentine's gifts for a partner, and for everyone else

The person you're buying for might be a partner, but it could just as well be a friend, a sister or a parent. The picture and the object can change to match. For a partner, start with a photograph of the two of you or a place you both know. For a friend or a relative, a pet photograph, a drawing they'd forgotten or a favourite painted figure keeps the gift personal without saying more than you mean it to.

If you're unsure how personal to go, the object is the dial. A mug or bottle gets used every day; a frame or canvas gets hung. One test works for every recipient: picture the gift on the day after. If it would look out of place on their desk, shelf or wall, choose again.

Five pictures worth printing

A photograph of the two of you

One where you can both be seen clearly, not a wide group shot.

A drawing one of you made

Pencil, pen or felt tip, on a page or in a sketchbook. It prints as drawn, wobbles included.

A place that matters

The hill, the harbour or the corner of a city you keep going back to. A landscape with no faces in it has no one to crop out.

A pet portrait photograph

One animal, looking towards the camera, with some space around it.

A favourite figure or artwork of theirs

A photograph of a miniature they painted, or a piece they finished and never hung. Gifts for miniature painters goes further on that one.

We work only from your upload, so the original never leaves home.

Choosing between a mug, a frame and a file

The object decides how often the picture is seen, and how much of it survives. A mug is an 11 oz white ceramic mug with a print area smaller than the mug, so one clear subject beats a busy scene. The 500 ml water bottle carries the picture on a front panel and goes wherever they go.

For a wall, an art print is the unframed sheet, for a frame they already own. A framed print is framed for you, in black or natural wood, so there's no separate frame to pick. A canvas is printed on a woven surface with a deeper edge, and a framed canvas adds a wood frame to that canvas. Undecided about frames? Printing and framing compares the choices.

A digital download is the file itself, emailed as a link. Choose your format lists the sizes and materials for each object.

Is the photo good enough, and is it yours to print?

A picture that looks sharp on a phone can fall apart on a wall, and the arithmetic is on the size pages. A4 at 300 dpi is 2480 × 3508 pixels, and A3 at 300 dpi is 3508 × 4961. Bigger prints need bigger files. The upload does the checking: it withdraws any size the file's resolution can't support, so a small photo might offer only the smaller ones. When the size you wanted disappears, a sharper original is the fix.

The best original is the camera file, not a copy that has travelled. Screenshots and pictures saved from social media can lose detail before they reach us, so ask whoever took the photo to send the original. Files can be JPEG, PNG or WebP, with a 10 MB limit, and prepare your artwork has the other checks.

Crop in close: on a mug, the face has to fill the middle.

Composition counts as much as pixels. On a mug, two faces in a wide shot shrink to specks, so crop in until they fill the middle of the picture. Whatever the object, hold faces and hands away from the border. For a drawing on paper, lay it flat in soft daylight, and photographing artwork without a studio deals with glare and colour. For a pet, get down to eye level and use daylight from a window, so the eyes are sharp and the background is calm. Before you pay, look at the preview's edges, because anything outside that frame won't print.

Each upload asks you to confirm this: "I confirm that I own this photo or image, or have permission to use it, and have the rights or permission to have it transformed and reproduced as requested." The same rule applies when it's a present. If a friend took the photograph of the two of you, ask them before you print it. Other people in the picture may not want to see themselves on an object, and a tighter crop keeps that question simple. If it's the recipient's own drawing or painting, ask for a file they're glad to share; gifts for artists covers how to do that without giving the game away.

Getting the file without tipping them off

Nothing in the order needs them: you upload, check the preview and pay on your own device. If the picture is one only they have, ask a friend or relative for a copy of the file. Keep a copy of the original file yourself, so a second object from the same picture later is only a new upload away.

A delivery address is only asked for on physical items, at checkout. It can be theirs, or yours if you'd rather hand the gift over in person. A digital download needs no address: the link is emailed to the address you order with as soon as the file is ready, so the timing of the reveal is yours.

Counting back from Valentine's Day

Everything physical is made to order. Most physical items arrive in 4-9 working days. Count back from that, then add the days it takes to get a good file. Order early if you want it before Valentine's Day. The price shown in the shop includes standard UK delivery, optional Priority delivery costs extra, and delivery and returns has the detail.

Left it late? The digital download doesn't depend on the post. It works as a present in its own right, or as a file to take to their own printer or framer. Check the file first: a small photo still won't support a large size.

Questions and answers

What can I use for a personalised Valentine's gift?

A photograph of the two of you, a drawing one of you made, a photograph of a place that matters, a pet portrait photograph, or a favourite painted figure or artwork of theirs. Upload it, choose "Print as it is", and the file is printed untouched on whichever object you choose.

Can I send a personalised Valentine's gift straight to my partner?

For physical items, yes. You enter the delivery address at checkout, so it can be theirs or your own. A digital download arrives by email, as a link, at the address you order with.

How early should I order a personalised Valentine's gift?

Most physical items arrive in 4-9 working days, and finding a good file can take longer than the making. Count back from Valentine's Day with both in mind. If time is short, a digital download arrives by email as a link once the file is ready.

Can I print a photo that has other people in it?

Yes, provided you have the rights. Uploads ask you to confirm ownership or permission. If someone else took the photograph, or it shows other people, ask them before you print it.

Why can't I pick a big size for my photo?

The upload only offers sizes your file can print sharply. Screenshots and saved copies carry less detail than the camera original, so ask for the original before you settle on a smaller object.
