Canvas size and outside size
The size you pick is the canvas face: 30 x 40, 40 x 50 or 50 x 70 cm. The frame sits outside it, so the finished piece is larger. The frame measures about 35.2 x 45.2 cm on a 30 x 40 canvas, 45.2 x 55.2 cm on a 40 x 50, and 55.2 x 75.2 cm on a 50 x 70. Measure the wall against the outside size, not the canvas size, and allow for the space you want around it.
Three frame colours
Black gives the sharpest edge and suits dark, high-contrast scenes. Dark wood is warmer and sits well with rich reds, browns and golds. Natural wood is the lightest of the three and suits pale walls and softer palettes. All three frame the same canvas; only the colour of the wood changes. Hold a sample of each colour, or something close to it, against the wall where the piece will hang before you decide.
Edges and composition
The canvas edges carry a soft band made from your picture's colours, not the picture itself, so the front shows your full image. Keep faces, hands and signatures a little away from the edge of the face anyway, because the frame sits close to it. Check the crop in portrait or landscape before you order.
